Extra boost for PhD candidates at Fontys

Fontys has a new PhD policy with the aim of substantially increasing the number of PhD students. Over the next few years, ten PhD scholarships will become available for employees each time. This way, the university wants to contribute to the further improvement of the quality of education and research.

Fontys also wants to further develop into a knowledge institution with a good balance between staff with a bachelor's, master's and PhD or PD degree.

Fontys employees Aukje Veenstra of HRM and Vilma Lenselink of the Education and Research department have shaped the promotion policy. And with the approval of the central participation council on 22 September, the policy is a fact.

Enriching careers

'With this, we continue to work on our own knowledge development. Knowledge development that seeps through into education and research, enabling us to meet the demands of the professional field and society even better. It is fantastic that Fontys can do this, also because it can enrich the careers of Fontys employees', says Aukje.

The PhD programmes are linked to the centres of expertise and knowledge centres that fall within Fontys' six knowledge themes. With these knowledge themes, Fontys links itself to important social issues in the region. 'This is how we respond even more to the Fontys for society idea,' Vilma says.

Investment

From 2023, ten staff members will be given the opportunity to enter a PhD programme every year. In order to write a PhD plan, the institute or department where the employee works will give the employee 0.2 fte of time for a year. From a central budget, the investment in time of a PhD student is covered for 0.4 fte for a maximum of five years.

The first scholarships will be awarded in early 2023, deadline for submitting an application is 13 January 2023.
